The lake, the mountains, the palm trees, (yes, palm trees in Switzerland). It’s one of those places that quietly surprises you, in the best way.
And if it’s your first time here, you might be wondering, where do I even start?
Let me share a few local tips. The kind I usually tell my guests at the beginning of a tour, to help you experience this region in a way that feels easy, personal, and a little more special.
Take it slow, the Swiss Riviera is not a rush destination
One of the biggest mistakes I see, people trying to do too much in one day.
Montreux, Vevey, Lavaux, maybe even Gruyères, it all looks close on the map, and it is. But the magic of the Swiss Riviera isn’t in rushing from place to place.
It’s in sitting by the lake a little longer than planned. It’s in taking that small path through the vineyards. It’s in saying yes to a glass of wine.
If you only take one thing from this, slow down. You’ll experience so much more.
What I always tell my guests on day one
Don’t try to see everything.
Leave space in your day.
And always say yes to a good glass of local wine.
It sounds simple, but it changes the whole experience.
Getting around is easier than you think
You really don’t need a car here.
The trains are incredibly easy and very punctual. Honestly it`s one of the most beautiful ways to travel, especially between Lausanne and Montreux through the Lavaux vineyards.
And if you have time, take a boat on Lake Geneva. It’s slower, but that’s kind of the point.
Yes, Switzerland is expensive, but…
Let’s be honest, Switzerland is not cheap.
But there are ways to enjoy it without overdoing.. Tap water is drinkable everywhere. There are lots of fountains and beautiful picnic spots all along the lake. Supermarkets like Coop or Migros are perfect for a relaxed lunch.
And when you do go out for a nice meal or wine, it actually feels worth it.
Don’t miss the small villages
Of course, Montreux and Vevey are beautiful. But some of the most memorable moments happen in the smaller places too.
Little villages in Lavaux, quiet corners above the lake, places where it feels like time moves differently.
These are the spots most people miss, simply because they don’t know they’re there.
And honestly, they’re some of my favourites to share.
Food is part of the experience
You can’t visit the Swiss Riviera without enjoying the food.
A cheese fondue with a view, a glass of local wine from Lavaux, a cheese fondue with a view, or even just a simple lunch by the lake, it all adds to the experience.
And yes, there are places you might not find on your own. Small, local, authentic.
Those are usually the best.
A few things that might surprise you
Shops are closed on Sundays, almost everything, so plan a little ahead.
The weather can change quickly, even in summer, so always bring a light layer.
And Swiss people might seem a bit reserved at first, but they are incredibly kind once you connect.
When to visit the Swiss Riviera
Each season has its own charm.
Spring feels fresh and quiet, Summer is lively and full of energy. Autumn brings warm colours and harvest season in the vineyards, Winter has its own cozy atmosphere.
If I had to choose, I would probably say spring. I just love when everything starts to bloom again, the flowers, the light, that fresh feeling in the air.
But honestly, it’s a close call with autumn. The colours in the vineyards are just beautiful, and it has this calm, golden atmosphere that’s hard to describe.
Winter is perfect if you love skiing, with easy access to the mountains just above the Riviera.
It really depends on what you’re looking for, each season gives you a slightly different experience.
A more personal way to experience it
